Diabetes Treatment in Sun City, AZ

Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes, is a group of endocrine disorders marked by persistently high blood sugar levels. It occurs when the pancreas produces insufficient insulin or when the body’s cells become resistant to insulin’s effects. Common symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and blurred vision.

The two primary types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2, with other forms also recognized. Type 1 diabetes is commonly treated with insulin replacement therapy, while type 2 diabetes can often be managed with anti-diabetic medications like metformin or semaglutide, alongside lifestyle changes. Gestational diabetes, which develops during pregnancy, usually resolves after childbirth.

Diagnosis:

Diabetes is diagnosed using blood tests to measure glucose levels. The diagnosis can be confirmed with one of the following:

  • Fasting plasma glucose level ≥ 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dL): This test requires fasting for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  • Plasma glucose ≥ 11.1 mmol/L (200 mg/dL) two hours after a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
  • Symptoms of high blood sugar along with plasma glucose ≥ 11.1 mmol/L (200 mg/dL), whether fasting or not.
  • Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level ≥ 48 mmol/mol (6.5%).

    Signs and symptoms:

The classic symptoms of untreated diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, and unexplained weight loss. Additional signs may include fatigue, blurred vision, and genital itching caused by Candida infections. While some individuals remain asymptomatic, type 1 diabetes often presents suddenly after a preclinical phase, whereas type 2 diabetes develops more gradually and may go unnoticed for years.

    Prevention:

Currently, there is no preventive measure for type 1 diabetes, although the presence of islet autoimmunity and multiple antibodies can indicate a higher risk. In contrast, type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 85-90% of all cases globally, can often be prevented or delayed through:

    • Maintaining a healthy weight
    • Engaging in regular physical activity
    • Following a balanced and nutritious diet
